ANNUAL FUNDRAISING DINNER

On October 15th, 2015, the Serra Club of Winnipeg hosted its Annual Fundraising Dinner in support of vocations. The money made at the dinner will help defray the cost of education for seminarians. The evening began at 6:00 p.m. at the Caboto Centre with refreshments, comradery and a raffle.

Guy Coughlin, Past President, Serra Canada Council, His wife Marlene, Beverly Hicks, Vice President of the District (MB / SK) Joseph Onwu, a friend of Serra, Father L. Altilia, S.J., President of St. Paul’s High School, and Irene Kirouac, President, Serra Club of Winnipeg.

Reverend Leonard Altilia, S.J., president of St. Paul’s High School, was the guest speaker. Father Altilia spoke about his discernment and journey to the priesthood, which began at a young age. He told of his desire to be a teacher as well as a priest, which he felt was not possible. Then he learned of the Jesuits. At that time, it was more acceptable to speak of vocations and there was no hesitation to make it known among his friends his desire to be a priest. Today, it is much more difficult for young men to talk of their decision. Since becoming a Jesuit Priest, Fr. Altilia has spent his career at schools and has never been a parish priest. He talked about ‘vocations’ and ‘praying for vocations’. He strongly feels living our baptismal vows is our vocation.
