Justin Cardinal Rigali, Serra Episcopal Advisor

(22 August 2008) There is a parallel between unity within the Church and the promotion of vocations, Justin Cardinal Rigali told fellow members attending the 66th annual convention of Serra International.

“It is essential,” the Cardinal said, quoting Pope Benedict XVI in the 2007 World Day of Prayer for Vocations, that “ecclesial movements be grounded in building up communion within themselves and within the wide body of the Church if they are effectively to promote vocations.”

The Cardinal spoke 16 August at the closing Mass of the meeting, held in Águas de Lindóia, near Sao Paolo, Brazil. His Eminence, who is completing his third three-year term as Serra's Episcopal Adviser, returned to the theme of unity in the Eucharist from his keynote address to the group the day before.

Quoting the Pope in the vocation document, he said, “The Eucharist is the source of that ecclesial unity for which Jesus prayed on the eve of his passion: ‘Father, that they also may be one in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me’ (Jn 17: 21). This intense communion favors the growth of generous vocations at the service of the Church.”
